On helping others
I had a conversation with someone who was picking out an affirmation label for her sister Joan. She described a little of Joan’s life and her challenges and mistakes. She wanted to get the I am willing to change affirmation because she perceived Joan as stuck. We decided that it didn’t really matter what she thought Joan needed; what mattered was what Joan thought. She eventually settled on I trust my intuition because Joan recently started to talk about feeling an inner push to a new direction.
As I reflected on that exchange, I realized that the best way to support someone else is to accept where and who they are right now. Listen. Encourage the positive changes. Try to not judge. If I have trouble with someone else’s situation, I need to change the way I think about it. Our thoughts are the only thing we can control anyway.
